quistel, vizsla, dog

The Hungarian or Magyar Vizsla is a dog breed originating in Hungary, they are sporting dogs and loyal companions, in addition to being the smallest of the all-round pointer breeds.

The Vizla, for centuries has held a rare position among sporting dogs... that of household companion and family dog.

The Vizsla is a natural hunter with an excellent nose and an outstanding trainability. They are lively, gentle mannered, very affectionate and sensitive, with a well-developed protective instinct.

The Vizsla, is a short coated, medium-size with a distinguished appearance. It's lightly built, lean but robust with defined muscles... with a similar physical characteristics to the Weimaraner.

Other breeds such as the Weimaraner, Redbone Coonhound and Rhodesian Ridgebacks have a similar body structure, although the Weimaraner and Ridgeback are larger to the Vizsla, but the Vizsla is typically leaner with more defined musculature.

The Vizslas nose will always have a reddish colour that blends with the coat colour, eye and nail colour should also blend with the coat colour.

This gentle-mannered, caring and highly affectionate breed quickly forms a close bond with their owners and children.  They are very high energy, love hunting, retrieving and are excellent swimmers.

The Vizsla is often referred to as 'Velcro' dogs because of their affection and loyalty, they like to be as close to its owner as much as possible.  They thrive on attention, exercise and interaction. When they feel unhappy, feel neglected or want something they will cry or whine.

The Vizsla is considered to be a robust dog, but some breeding, using a small number of dogs have led to heritable illnesses in including Hip Dysplasia, Canine Epilepsy, Cancer and Sebaceous Adenitis.  Vizlas can also be prone to skin and food allergies.

Unlike most other dogs, Vizlas do not have an undercoat, therefore they are not suited for living outdoors, they must be kept inside with the family.
